Relief to Soren as SC quashes proceedings against him in HC

In a relief to Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren, the SC quashed the proceedings against him in Jharkhand High Court on a PIL seeking probe against him for "money laundering" and said that HC entertained the plea despite lack of evidence. The SC said there is nothing wrong in allowing probe against people who occupy high offices but taking cognisance of the matter on generalised submissions which do not even make prima facie satisfaction of the court, is "abuse of the process of the court”.

SC acquits 3 on death row for teen’s rape-murder

The Supreme Court on Monday acquitted three men sentenced to death in the brutal gangrape-cum-murder of a 19-year-old woman in Delhi’s Chhawla in 2012. SC said the trial court acted as a “passive umpire” while the prosecution failed to prove the guilt of the accused by adducing cogent and clinching evidence. Pointing out to many “glaring lapses” during the trial, the SC said the prosecution failed to prove their involvement in the crime beyond reasonable doubt.
