Fertility rate declined by 20% in India in 10 years: SRS data

The average GFR in India stood at 86.1 from 2008 to 2010 (three-year period) and has come down to 68.7 during 2018-20 (average of three years), according to the Sample Registration System (SRS) data 2020 released recently. The decline, SRS data show, has been steeper in rural areas at 20.2% compared to 15.6% in urban areas.

Uttarakhand’s sex ratio (number of females per 1,000 males) at birth was found to be the worst in the country at 844, and Kerala’s the best, at 974, according to the Sample Registration System Statistical Report 2020.
