The Centre on Wednesday told the Delhi high court that a citizen’s fundamental rights must be respected. In an affidavit filed on a plea by Twitter users Megh Bulletin and Wokeflix challenging the suspension of accounts by the platform, the government said a person’s liberty and freedom of expression cannot be “waylaid or jettisoned in the slipstream of social and technological advancement”, adding that suspension of accounts must be the last resort.

With 80 new ones, govt aims to have 220 airports by 2025
The government has set a target of increasing the number of airports from 140 to 220 by 2025, civil aviation minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said in Lok Sabha on Wednesday, as he expected that the revival of the sector, scarred by the Covid-19 pandemic, may lead to a substantial jump in passenger traffic.

Rape is rape even if perpetrated by husband, says court
An act of sexual assault on the wife, albeit by the husband, cannot but be termed a rape, the Karnataka HC observed on Wednesday. “A man is a man; an act is an act; rape is a rape, be it performed by a man, the ‘husband’, on the woman, the ‘wife’,” the court held while refusing to interfere with the proceedings initiated against the accused husband vis-a-vis charges of rape, cruelty, criminal intimidation and also offences under Pocso Act in connection with alleged sexual acts.

NDA to train girls on a par with boys
The National Defence Academy (NDA) said on Tuesday that a majority of military training activities of boy and girl cadets would be conducted together, and it was “geared up” for training the first batch of girl cadets in an absolutely gender-neutral manner from June 2022. The move was crucial keeping their employability in mind, wherein the women officers are required to command the troops of men, the NDA said in a press release.

Central univ colleges won’t consider board results for UG seats
No weightage will be given to board exam performances in undergraduate admissions in all central universities and their affiliated colleges in the 2022-23 academic session. The University Grants Commission on Monday announced that the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) score will be the basis for admission this year. However, the universities will be allowed to set a minimum eligibility on board exams marks.

SC to order scrutiny of Covid certificates to nail fakes
The Supreme Court on Monday decided to order random scrutiny of Covid death claim applications to identify those who got compensation with forged documents after the issue was flagged by the Centre which received complaints from several states. A bench of Justices MR Shah and BV Nagarathna reserved its order on Centre’s plea for random checking of documents and said it will pass order on March 23 when it will also decide which agency will carry out scrutiny.

China airliner crashes with 132 on board; no sign of survivors
A China Eastern Airlines Boeing 737-800 with 132 people on board crashed in mountains in southern China on a domestic flight on Monday after a sudden descent from cruising altitude. The jet was carrying 123 flyers and nine crew members. The airline said it deeply mourned the death of passengers and crew, without specifying how many were killed. Media said there were no signs of survivors.

No Class 12 re-exam for hijab protesters: Karnataka govt
Hundreds of pre-university (PU) II students in Karnataka who had participated in hijab protests will not be given a second chance to appear for their practical examinations, which they boycotted in February-March. In Karnataka, Class 12 is called PU II. Two days after hinting at a re-exam, the government on Sunday categorically ruled out that option for students who were “absent” for the practicals conducted as part of the board examinations.

Strategic Zoji La reopens ahead of schedule amid LAC tension

2 held for 'death threats' to judges over hijab verdict
