Trial courts in the country sentenced 165 people to death in 2022, the highest in a year in the last two decades. This is up from 146 prisoners who were sent to death row in 2021. In almost a third of the capital punishment cases, the offender had committed a sexual crime. At the end of 2022, 539 were on death row, the highest since 2016.

UPI transactions hit record 782 crore in December

Transactions on the UPI platform hit a record of 782 crore in December 2022, with the value touching a new high of Rs 12.8 lakh crore. In terms of number of transactions, the December figure is 7% higher than November's.

India eyes MacBook production, may boost incentive scheme

After the success of iPhone production in India, the government is set to sweeten the deal to kickstart the coveted manufacturing of MacBooks and iPads in the country, looking to broad-base the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for IT hardware to nearly Rs 20,000 crore against the existing outlay of Rs 7,350 crore which failed to receive much response from the industry.
